Censorship

Related to country: United States

"censorship reflects society's lack of confidence in itself. it is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime" (Stewart, Potter)

this blog will be focussing around the concepts of art censorship, music censorship and the censorship of people in general. although we no longer hear very much on the subject of censorship, it is still very relevent. in our own country we have a banned book list, the movies we go to and the music we listen too is all rated for our easiest convenience, no matter what, free speech will always be in danger from politicians and people in power.

"Nature knows no indecencies; man invents them." (Rhodes, David,2006)

Censorship is one of the clearest signs of disparity in a society, it creates stressed, bland cultures whos people are repressed and have little rights. while some cultures flourish under constircted rulesets of what makes up a work of art, the nations who subject their people to censored art and infrormation the most shunt themselves by fostering a people who are unreliable and a country that is ugly. ten years ago then mayor of New York rudolph giuliani set up what was called a Decensy commission, charged with censoring the artwork shown in museums and exhibits around New York, the commision would shut down any showing of censored material, which included any art considered "...politcal, sexual, or religious in nature"(Rhodes, David), suspiciously often anti-giuliani works. The commision was abolished soon after he was sworn in, but the point remains, free speech is an open target to polititions who think it might be be easier without an opinion being heard.
